In my honest opinion, MP3 players are more than a vital fashion accessory.
1) It is hell to carry a wallet full of discs just to change them. 2) It is tiring to listen to the same artiste for more than 3 songs consecutively. 3) Said portable CD player totally screws my mobility (even if I shove it into some cargo pants) 4) I don't have a CD-R/RW drive to burn my own MP3 CDs (I concede that such drives are cheaper than MP3s though) 5) Flash MP3 players are so light that in-line controls are a frivolous investment. (I hang mine on my neck with a neck-chain) 6) Not all MP3 players are buggy, suffer from symptomatic loss of features, nor do they have worse battery lives than some of the CD players - besides, a single "AAA" powering a player for 20 hours straight is more impressive than two "AA"s lasting for 30 hours.
I don't mean to take a contradictory stand to you, but I feel that you were swabbing all MP3 players with a broad brush.
My Samsung Yepp ST-5 is a choice I have never regretted: SRS WOW effects, in-built FM-radio, direct recording from "Line-In", and a recorder that is able to take input from a built-in microphone, or record radio broadcasts into MP3 files instantly. At 20 hours for a single "AA" ordinary battery (those brands mired in relative obscurity), it was love at first sight for me.
I don't hope to change your opinion about MP3 players, just trying to balance things out.

Score: 1:1
Been really tempted to buy an iPod Shuffle lately, but, but, it's a want more than a need, and i probably won't be able to live with the guilt.
